Eine der ersten Maßnahmen der Stadtverwaltung von New York, um dem Treiben des Occupy Wall Street Camps im Zuccotti Park (17.09.-15.11.2011) Einhalt zu gebieten, war es, den Gebrauch von elektrischer Verstärkung und Megaphonen zu verbieten. Als Reaktion darauf wurde hier das menschliche Mikrophon, das Human Mic oder People’s Mic geschaffen.
Ein Redner sagt einen kurzen Satz und macht dann eine Pause. Diejenigen, die ihn hören können, wiederholen den Satz unisono, darauf sagt der Redner einen weiteren Satz, macht dann erneut eine Pause und wartet auf eine Antwort usw.
Eine neue Form des Wechselgesangs, verwandt mit den antiphonen Gesängen in Liturgie und Kirchenmusik, Spirituals, Gospels, Blues und Jazz, die sich aus dem Worksong entwickelt haben.
